I know, I’m late posting the newest winner of the Dragon’s Treasure Award. It turns out, being a busy mom and coming up with a weekly winner of an award is a lot harder than it looks from the outside. Anyway, this week, I have a winner for you. Troy Williams’ blog, titled “My Bipolar Life“.
Troy is an awesome person. I can’t really describe him better than he has himself, so here:
I am a 51-year-old retired Child Psychotherapist who uses social media to educate the public about mental illness and the plight of those people society reject. It is my hope to stamp out the stigma surrounding mental illness and eradicate child abuse of all types.
He also does a great job of describing the purpose of his blog, but if I quoted that, not only would this post be way too long, I wouldn’t be doing my job here, which is to present the award.
Troy’s latest post came out on August 19th, just shortly after people learned that Jared Fogle (You know. The Subway guy) “made a plea agreement with the Justice Department on charges that he paid for sex with minors and received child pornography.” That was a shock for everyone. Troy, however, used the opportunity to discuss the fact that child abusers can be ANYONE! It’s true that, 9 out of 10 times, children are sexually abused by someone they know and trust, but 1 time out of ten, they can be people they don’t really know.
In the post I’m referencing, Troy pointed out that parents who legitimately want to protect their children, can’t exactly put them into a bubble. They need to get out and live their lives. They need to, as Ms Frizzle of the Magic School Bus liked to say, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!” It’s how they learn. So, this post teaches parents the best ways to help their children be safe.
Most of the posts on this blog are like this. This is why Troy is receiving this week’s award. I hope he displays it as proudly as I add his blog to my hoard.
