Today, we’ll begin with the weather. Yesterday, a snowstorm dumped nearly a foot of snow all over parts of the states of Washington and Oregon. Why are we beginning with that? Because it was also the top story in the newspaper today. During the storm, which lasted all day long, we had to buy groceries, so, funnily enough, we were out in it, not just once but twice. This necessitated driving at speeds well below the speed-limit and, yes, occasionally wondering if we were going to end up in a car accident because a hill was ski-slope slick. Thankfully, jak is a superlative driver and, although I caught myself clenching my posterior any number of times and clutching the car door handle in a death grip that even Darth Vader couldn’t have made me release, we made it home safely. Needless to say, the kids are thrilled to death over the snow. Boy, of course, had to put on his duds and go out and play in it. Princess, naturally, has more grand plans. She wants to build a fortress of snow and
steal appropriate snow from other people’s driveways and parking lots. Not sure they’ll mind. If we see a snow plow out our way, though, that will be a welcome surprise for all concerned.
In sports last week, the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl. Now, any of you who know me well enough will probably note that you have never seen me express any interest in US-style football before. That’s because, generally speaking, I don’t have any interest in it at all. In fact, to my knowledge, the only interest in US-style football any member of my family has expressed thus far has been to try to teach Boy to catch one in the backyard from time to time. However, this is the HOME TEAM we’re talking about. People all over Washington who’ve never even heard of US-style football are buying flags and tee-shirts and showing their pride. It’s like, since the Seahawks won, we all did. Especially since, last time the Seahawks made the Super Bowl, we had our uniform pants beat off us. Now, I didn’t buy any banners or tee-shirts or anything, but I’ll admit I did indulge in a happy rendition of “We Are the Champions.”
